Again, this room isn't completely finished. I have a feeling all my posts in the short term are going to start like this! I had grandiose ideas of art projects, but ran out of time before our move, and was still wavering creatively when I did have the time. So I probably won't get to it for a while, but the bones are in the room. This isn't a typical little boy's room, but then again, I don't have a typical little boy. I have the most special nugget in the world!!!!
Here are some rooms that inspired my direction. I tagged these on Houzz way back when.
First there's this super neutral room, and I was immediately smitten with the nightstand and updated retro feel, and that's what sent me down the mid-century modern path.

I found this photo and loved the pillows and thought they'd look great against a navy blue background.

And then I tagged this because I love the use of the retro car art. It's boyish, but still stylish, and it's not the same ol' same ol'. Seriously I'm sending this plea out to the executives responsible for kids bedroom merchandise - I'm begging you on behalf of all mothers with sons... you NEED to offer more selection than soccer balls, giraffes, and toy truck decals for little boys rooms!!!
And then I found this and it all started coming together!

So here are all the elements:
- Paint - Sherwin Williams Naval, mixed at 75% just like the office. It was time consuming, but it is the perfect shade of navy!!
- You might remember Brent and I built the headboard and went with bright white. I love how it looks against the navy.
- The bedding is from Target
- Nightstands were a major restoration project, and I love how they came out.
- Yellow wingback chair was my first upholstery project!
- Mom helped me sew the curtains. Those are lined, thank you very much! There was also major drama in hanging them. First the heavy duty anchors pulled right out of the wall. Then I realized I made a huge mistake when buying all my window rods and hardware. I purchased the sizes based on window size, not based on how wide I'd hang the curtains themselves. Oopsy! Also, I bought a 1" rod for a 1/2" pocket. So 3 whammies, but we got them hung in the end.
- For now I've got the dresser we bought him shortly before our big re-location to Texas in there. I'm not loving it though - there's something classic about black against navy even though it comes and goes from fashion rules. But I love the white and brown stained nightstands, and those don't work well with the black dresser. I'll have to noodle on that.
- The light fixture in the ceiling is the Supernova mini chandelier by AF Lighting
- The floor lamp I had from our last house.
- The bright yellow lamp just got a makeover! It was white and in my mom's bedroom, but she no longer needed it and we decided it would look just like a lemon with a quick coat of spraypaint. And we stumbled on that awesome lampshade at HomeGoods this weekend!
- And because we made the headboard so tall to break up that long and tall navy wall, it needed a little something too, so I made a bunting with the nugget's bedtime prayer on it. I just transferred the letters onto yellow, green, and charcoal seersucker fabric, snipped some holes and ran jute rope through it.
- Yellow toy bins were just a random find in the garden section at Ikea!
Here it is!
You can see I carried the yellow and the navy stripe into his bathroom, but just not on the walls. :) |
Once I get some art on the walls and decide what to do with the dresser, if anything, I'll be really happy with how it turned out. I like everything except the corner where the yellow chair and the dresser meet. That area needs work. The room is not as special as my nugget, but I did my best and will continue to tweak once we're settled in all the other spaces.
More rooms coming soon!
