Home Office - ALMOST Complete!

I'll get to the pictures, but first I just want to clear my own air.  My head is in a much better place today.  I'm feeling less frustrated by everything left to do, and suddenly just feeling so grateful to start a new routine today.  Today is also day 1 of renewed focus on the diet and exercise a day long overdue!  I got out for a walk this afternoon, and although the hills in our community are a killer compared to the flat cookie cutter suburbia area where we rented for the past year, it's such a pretty walk.  75 degrees, sunshine, a constant breeze... we really live in a beautiful part of the country, state, and metroplex.  Some phone snapshots from my walk today...

Now on to the namesake of this post.  This is the wacky room in the house - the colors sort of diverge from the same color palette that's repeated through the rest of the house.  It was one of the first rooms that started coming together in my head, and the vision was an eclectic peacock tone room that doesn't scream "I'm a peacock themed room!"  You've seen most of the individual elements of this room already!

This is one of the smaller rooms relative to the square footage of the house, and there of two of us who need to work in it, so I was a little worried about going with dark walls, especially since the front of the house gets less light than the back.  But after I painted the nugget's room and loved the color I dove in.  It took 3 coats and probably could have done with a fourth but I was so done after three no matter what.  Painting two rooms by myself with 10 foot ceilings a super dark color that needs 3 coats of cutting in and 3 coats rolled on STUNK!!!!!!!!!!  and I'm being generous.  Particularly because the rest of our craziness didn't take a timeout so I could paint!  The color is Sherwin Williams Naval, but mixed at 75% to reduce the saturation a bit.  Special shout out to Elizabeth for the 75% tip!

I don't have a full photo of the office upon move-in.  I only have a photo of the floors after they were stained but before they were sealed.

We decided, shocker, to DIY our desks somewhat.  We were both being persnickety about the shape/size/orientation of our desks.  We both wanted an L-shape, but one that doesn't take up a huge footprint or look bulky with drawers etc.  I wanted the long side of my "L" in a position to look out the window.  Brent wanted his to sit up a bit higher.  We wanted wood tops with white bases.  We couldn't find anything to meet all those needs, even with all the configurations available at Ikea, and they didn't have any real wood tops available anyway.

So we decided to use the metal bases and legs from Ikea.  This is what they looked like assembled while we tested the configuration before going to the next step.  I spray painted the bases white, and then we bought our own wooden panels (24" deep) and had them cut to size at Lowes.  I sanded and stained them (Special Walnut), and Brent poly'd them.  We also got a cable management basket that coordinates with the desk frame - it was the best $5 ever spent!

Speaking of wires, we invested in 2 separate DSL lines for internet because we both work from home, and the speed is much slower than what we're used to.  However, the connections are all in the corner by Brent's desk, so we had to run a 100 foot phone cord and a 50' cat5 cable the length of two walls to get to my desk.  I think we did a pretty slick job concealing them with some white data-hiding-stickum-thingamajiggies!  They look like another detail on our baseboards.  :)

So here it is - our slightly wacky, but still somewhat grownup home office.

Can I tell you how happy I am to have found a place for this painting?  We've gotten a lot of miles out of this guy and I wasn't ready to part with it yet.  It used to sit over our fireplace in our last house.  I was afraid the red would overpower the rest of the jewel tones in the room but it doesn't and I love it.

I still need to hang my calendar and then the bigger challenge is to find 2 round 5 foot area rugs that are flat enough to roll our old chairs over, but soft enough to absorb some of the sound and echo, and in a coordinating color.  It's going to be a tall order.  That could take a while, so we're calling this room done enough to share.  :)  Hope you like it - it's a FAR cry from our setup at our rental for the past year and I think we're going to thoroughly enjoy being back to work!

Back soon with more room updates!
